A couple of random thoughts from today:
- How long is it going to take to get used to writing 2022 instead of 2021?
- It was an uncharacteristically warm day today at Baal. I remember vividly a previous edition, when I was so cold after the women’s race, that I was standing next to one of the industrial generators to try to warm up by using the excess heat it was emitting. It was a bitterly cold day and today couldn’t have been more different. While I really enjoyed some warmth, it feels quite unnatural to have such warm weather in the middle of winter. But here we are.
- Golazo must really hate the press. Firstly, the parking (for the second time in a row) was a good fifteen minute walk from the press room – unless you are Flemish and managed to blag your way closer. Then an hour after the race, someone cut the internet cable, so there was no internet.
- I was trying to be super organised and decided to get my covid test, that is necessary for going home, today instead of tomorrow. When I got to Zaventem, I went to the same place where I had my covid test upon entering the country a week ago. Only after 30 minutes of queueing did it transpire that for departure-related covid tests are done at a different location. At the other location, there was an even longer queue, so what I thought would be a quick affair took me a better part of an hour and a half. At least it came back negative.
- I lost the hood of my long lens today – at least temporarily. During the junior men’s race, I walked up from the final corner to the cycling centre and was about to start shooting when I realised that I was missing the hood. I panicked as these things are often inexplicably expensive, so I backtracked my steps and I did manage to find it and it only added 2000 steps to my daily step count.
- The only superstition I observe is a Hungarian one, which stipulates that whatever you do on the first day of the year will characterise the rest of the year. For that reason, I’ve been getting up super early for the last three or four years to do short run, in an attempt to foster the good habit of exercise through 2022. I also got paid by a client, so far so good. I hope the nuisances described above won’t characterise 2022, otherwise I’m screwed…

Well from a photography point of you I think the omens for 2022 are looking good. The photos from the last two races have been great. Really liked Carmen Alvarado running at the top of the stairs and Wout running through the corner in particular.
