Having been doing this for almost ten years now, I should have learnt not to take good weather for granted. But when I left the hotel this morning, it was all blue sky and sunshine, so I didn’t bother putting the waterproof covers on. That bit me in the backside during the U23 race, when suddenly it started to rain like there was no tomorrow.

While we’re at it – this was probably the closest I’ve ever stayed to a race. I could literally see the course from my room, which meant that I didn’t get up until 11:00 and I have still managed to catch the start of the women’s race. The mattress at the Middelpunt hotel was so astonishingly great, that I asked reception where they were sourced from. His response, however, cooled down my enthusiasm: the mattresses cost around €3000, a sum I am not yet willing spend on a mattress. Well, not yet.

Everything was anchored down by huge water tanks, making sure that the gale force wind didn’t blow things away.

I arrived a day earlier and the constant, driving rain on Friday held the promise of an epic mud fest. However, the wind helped to dry the most of the mud. But not all of it.

The flyovers proved popular during the short but intense spells of driving rain.

Wout van Aert has always been a popular rider, but the attention has clearly become lot more intense since Hoogerheide.

The big duel just never materialised. While Niels Albert gave all he had, he couldn’t stay ahead of Nys.

Tom Meeusen often rides strong in the first half of the races, only to fade away later on. This wasn’t the case today. Kevin Pauwels was riding him for the better part of the race, but Meeusen rode his own tempo in the last two lap.

Spectators were swarming towards the podium ceremony to celebrate Sven Nys’ 13th overall Superprestige win, while the last rider was still out on the course.
