Whenever I try to explain to someone what I do, they always ask whether I’ve ever shot the Tour de France. I always patiently explain that no, I haven’t and I don’t really want to, my thing is cyclocross and I’m really afraid on the back of the moto.
That being said, the memory of last year’s Tour of Britain were still vivid, there is something larger-than-life about seeing a major bike race up and close, so as the start of the 2014 Giro d’Italia’s start in Belfast grew closer and closer, I decided to hop on a plane and experiment a bit with it. I haven’t got an assignment, I just want to see what I can do on my own at one of the biggest road race in the world.
Also, Northern Ireland and Belfast seemed an ideal place to take it easy as I don’t have to leave the country where I live, they drive on the same side of the road as we do and I can even listen to BBC’s Radio 4 while I’m chasing the peloton.
Today I drove around Saturday’s route to find a few nice spots and to have enough info to make a game plan – this is not cross, you NEED a game plan or you’re screwed. The way it is looking at the moment, regardless of my plan, I still might be screwed. We’ll see. In the meantime, I snapped a few photos of the countless pink things by the route. What was even nicer to see and hear how involved and how proud the locals were.
Tomorrow is the team time trial in Belfast, good warm-up for the real thing on Saturday. More to come soon.
