Today, I have learnt a valuable lesson on never giving up. Normally, such learnings come through watching rider doing something inspiring on his or her bike, but not today.
The day started a bit hurriedly as we overslept and we arrived a bit late at Gavere, then we got lost, then it took ages to get to the race venue. It all resulted in me missing the most of the women’s race. I was very annoyed but there wasn’t anything I could have done. I then set out to recce the course while the juniors raced and while it gave me a rough idea of the course, I didn’t find nice angles or interesting spots. I continued during the beloften (or U23) race and still nothing. I tried different angles, different lighting setups – still nothing. I was getting more and more desperate and still nothing.
Then, not long before the elite men started, I found a good spot near a small pond and my perseverance prevailed. I managed to catch some great moments, like as Klaas Vantornout looks back to check whether his teammate, Kevin Pauwels was ok and I was flying from then on. I found a couple of new spots that I really liked and took some pretty good shots – combined with the great lights and the amazing atmosphere, it turned out to be an awesome day.
It was a good lesson not to give up – even if you lack inspiration. Just keep soldier on and eventually, it will all come together. Or not. Today I was probably very lucky.
The schedule is not easing up, another double weekend is approaching with the famous Koksijde on Saturday and then the distant Gieten on Sunday – so stay tuned.
