I got very excited two years ago, when the schedule of the 2020/2021 cyclocross season was announced – Zonhoven would become a World Cup! Then came Covid and it was cancelled, like so many of the races last season. Thus, today was the first-ever World Cup in Zonhoven and it didn’t disappoint. It feels like we’ve had some cracking racing this season, but maybe this was the best race of the season so far? First it was Laurens Sweeck, who got the lead, then Eli Iserbyt and finally Toon Aerts – but a group of six riders were always lurking behind and never let the leader out of its sight. It was a really exciting race, even I enjoyed watching it, even though I often can’t quite follow what’s going on, as I’m mostly focusing on taking photos.
It was a good weekend, lots of sunshine and warmth, let’s see if it is repeated in Oversije and Koppenberg… I think I’ve seen one dry edition of Overijse, whereas I’ve seen many more Koppenbergcrosses that were warm and dry than wet ones. We’ll see in a week’s time.
