Due to family reasons, I had to miss the first day of the European Championships and I nearly missed the second day, too, due to almost getting a heart attack. Not an actual one, to be honest, but nearly. Normally, I spend £60-80 per weekend on the ferry or the Eurotunnel, whichever works out better. When I started booking travel for this season, I was rather unhappy when I realised that the prices have doubled since the first Covid lockdown. I’ve been commuting to the continent for over ten years now and prices have been pretty steady. They rose a bit every year, but nothing too serious. The only time I’d have to pay more than that was at Christmas, when a return Eurotunnel ticket would cost me £150-160. Having to pay that every week eats into my profit, but I decided to keep on going and to absorb the extra costs.
What nearly caused me a heart attack on Friday was that suddenly all cheaper fares disappeared and now a return ticket costs around £250 on the ferry or well over £300 via the Eurotunnel. The prices quadrupled compared to the previous seasons and then come single-race weekends on top of that – the above costs are not distributed between two races over a weekend. If I want to come over for just one race (as it is and has been the case many times this season), it costs me four times as much as it used to. In the next couple of days, I will have to take a serious look at the rest of the season to figure out how to make this financially viable.
In the meantime, please enjoy the photos from today’s races!
