I thought it was going to be ok. I took a calculated risk and it didn’t work out. Everybody knew that the forecast promised heavy raining at Zolder for yesterday. I have done very rainy days without the protective covers on my cameras, without any problems. As the covers only work with lenses I didn’t want to use today (70-200 f/2.8 and 24-70 f/2.8), I made a decision in the morning, that I take my chances and go out in the rain without protection. It seemed to be ok, but in the first lap of the race the raining got really, really heavy and that’s when the 1D started to play up. I could only roll the shutter-speed dial to shorter values, not the other way. Then it just stopped working altogether.
The 5D MkIII worked until the end of the podium ceremony, but then it decided to call it quits. Peter Dekoninck, another Canon shooter was kind enough to borrow me one of his spare bodies, but using just one body on such a rainy day made shooting very challenging. It was one of my worst day at a cyclocross race and I can only blame myself. With the help of Kristof Ramon, I’ve managed to secure two rental bodies to get me through Sunday, and I think the lesson has been learned.
On a more positive note, it was great to photograph the first British cyclocross World Championships win of my career – congratulations to Evie Richards!
