So it is over. My first Giro Rosa was exceptional experience. It was hot, it was hard, it was tiring, but boy, was it fun! Following a Grand Tour has a certain atmosphere, you meet the same people day after day, the grumpy marshall at the PPO on the first day waves us through with a wide smile on the last day. ‘Corsa Escorta’ riders and police moto pilots greets you with a smile in the morning and life gets just a little easier because of that. You also ease into the rhythm of the stages, and you fret less and less about things. Things will work out, they always do.
It’s been a great ten days and there were quite a few people who made it special. First and foremost, I would like to thank to my moto pilot, Chris, who worked tirelessly all week to keep us safe while making my, sometimes slightly indecisive, requests happen. It wouldn’t have worked without his partner, Sandra, who was our trusted assistant, moving the car from the hotel to the finish line every day, waiting patiently with my post-race gear while we were chasing the riders. Thank you both.
I would also like to thank Sean Robinson of Velofocus fame and Bart Hazen for helping me out with information and with good company all week.
Last, but not least, I would like to thank all the riders I’ve managed to talk to this week. Thank you for spending some of your precious time with me, just chatting or answering my silly questions. I would also like to thank the team mechanics and soigneurs for all the help, for the water and for the smiles.
And thank you, dear reader, for coming back and enjoying my shots from the race. I hope I have managed to show how amazing riders these women are and I hope I have managed to do my tiny part in showcasing the sport and make it a bit more interesting to people.
More to come soon, I’ll be back in two week’s time, straight out of Paris, with photos from La Course!
