Be careful what you wish for. Everybody wanted a bit cooler weather after the searing hot of the past days. The morning welcomed us with a thin layer of clouds, which made things cooler from the get go and we all expected lower temperatures in the mountains, but I don’t think many of us wished for torrential rain with hail thrown in for good measure.
Because that’s exactly what we got, but I don’t think many people complained about it, it was just nice to not to be overheated in every single moment. A brief respite after a long stint in the oven.
The racing was exciting, lots of attacks and it brought some colour into the visually boring first 50 kilometres. Another interesting feature of the day were tunnels. When you ride in them on your own, it’s fine, but surrounded by cars, riders and motorbikes, it can be a slightly daunting thing do to. At the end of the longest tunnel, there were amber-coloured lights and from a distance, it looked like the outside world is amber. It made me wonder whether the Third World War is finally happening or it is just a optical illusion. It was the latter.
Tomorrow should be even more exciting today, three big climbs, that will pull the field apart. I’m quite looking forward to it, preferably without rain.
