Merksplas, in a weird way, kind of foreshadowed the 2020 cycling year. It was the first race of the year that was cancelled, though for completely non-Covid reasons – it was an extreme-weather decision, the wind was so strong, the organisers deemed the race unsafe to put on. I remember, I just drove past the Ring around Antwerp when my phone ring and heard the news.
Nine months later, Merksplas is back, for the first time and I hope it stays. It’s a great venue, visually, it has a lot of potential, I really enjoyed shooting it today. And the racing for both categories were really exciting. What did you think of the course? Did it look good on the TV?
Next will be the first double weekend of the season and it will be a beast – after Kortrijk, I’ll be hitting the road to Tabor. I just downloaded Barack Obama’s new book in audiobook format, it’s 27 hours long, it should keep me entertained for the drive and back…

Great set of photos and I thought it looked really beautiful on TV as well. What a course and terrific races. I hope the rest of the season plays out like this with both the mens and women’s races being so genuinely exciting.
Enjoy Obama.
