I don’t know how much longer this can carry on. I don’t know how it looked in the TV, but here, in Boom, it looked like there weren’t more than 3-4,000 people. There were more people here last year for the women’s race. Fewer spectators mean less ticket revenue, so you have to cut corners and we’re in a downward spiral. To be honest, this race has always been one of the least busy/popular races in Belgium (I’m basing this on my visual assessment and not official figures), but it will be interesting to see the attendance in the coming weeks/months.
I’m now off to the train station, as I’ll be channeling today my inner Greta Thunberg and instead of flying to Switzerland, I’m taking the train. It’s an overnight train and it’s not a sleeper, so tomorrow will be a long day…
