Koppenbergcross delivered on many fronts, except for one. There were many reports about the mud on the course the days prior to the race. I was expecting a bona fide mud mayhem, but there was no sign of that, just the usual cow poo mayhem.
Other than this, it was a cracking day. The racing was excellent and exciting in every category. Though it was clear that Mathieu van der Poel had an uncharacteristic off-day, I don’t think it decreases the value of Toon Aerts’ great victory. The battle between him, Michael Vanthourenhout and Wout Van Aert was fascinating to watch for an hour. Good thing I didn’t have to ascend the Koppenberg eight times, like they did.
