It’s early in the cyclocross season, but I have a hunch, that outdoing the organisers of the Iowa City Cyclocross World Cup will be nigh on impossible. Though the weather was very hot, other than that, it was almost the perfect race. The course itself was on par with what you see in Belgium, the organisation was impeccable (press room food!!), there was mud and the crowd was incredible. It’s a common misconception, that the crowds are amazing in Belgium. It’s true if you are Sven Nys or Kevin Pauwels or Wout Van Aert. But once the top five rides past, people lose interest and start chatting, drinking, doing almost anything but cheering on the remaining riders. Not in Iowa (or in Vegas, for that matter). If you’re riding, you get all the love, regardless of your position in the race.
It’s been an incredible race and I can only imagine how great this race must have been in the past in colder months of the year. Maybe one day we’ll see a mid-season World Cup race here…
Signing off for now, I’ll be flying back to London tomorrow evening, stay tuned next week for the first European race in Gieten, the Netherlands.

I’m partial because I live in Iowa and love CX but I think we showed the world we know how to put on a World Cup event. I hope the racers had as much fun as we did watching,
