One of the hardest thing in the process of making a book is to let go of it. We have worked very hard for months together to put together the perfect book, but there are deadlines and we can’t tweak it and enhance it for eternity. Every year, there is a moment when I have to say the words: It is ready. I dread this moment, because there always are a couple of little tweaks I’d love to try out, change the place of a photo or two, etc. but that’s just the nature of the beast.

We’ve wrapped up this year’s book a bit sooner than last year and for the very first time, I was present when the printing of the book started. It was a very exciting experience, even though the printing itself is not that fascinating. What WAS fascinating how our hard work materialised on large sheets of paper, seemingly out of nowhere. After fine-tuning each sheet, the print master let the machines loose to produce all the necessary copies of that page bundle. The secret autistic in me found the whole process mesmerising.

This was a few weeks back now, the books are traveling from Hungary to London as I write this and they should arrive on Sunday, so the first pre-orders will be sent out on Tuesday and Wednesday. And if you haven’t ordered your copy, you can certainly do it here, it will be sent out in a week’s time: https://cyclephotos.bigcartel.com/product/cyclocross-2014-2015

The big printing machine was booked for the whole day for the Cyclocross Album

This cartful of paper would last for roughly half of the book – there was another stack not too far, waiting to be printed on.

The paper is being fed into the printing machine.

The printing master kindly explained how the printing process works on these Heidelberg machines. The paint somehow is transferred onto this metal sheet and that leaves its mark on the paper. Or that’s what I think he said…

Once the first batch of a sheet comes out, the printing master chef king checks that the colours are correct.

He also checks through a magnifying glass that the four colours have been properly aligned. If not, he turns some dials, pushes some buttons and orders the machine to spew out another batch of prints.

He also puts together a mock-up of the book from the pages, to make sure that the pages follow each other in the correct order.

Once a sheet is finalised, it gets printed in 500 copies.

    Hi Balint,
Wow, that looks amazing, it must be really exciting for you to be there and see your book being printed in front of you….now I just can’t wait to read it (cough cough, I mean inspect it before I wrap it up for Duncan’s birthday) x
