I was very much looking forward to covering the 2015 Flèche Wallone Femmes race, but things didn’t quite turn out the way I had expected. Jet lag, four hours of sleep, a motorway accident and a lost accreditation request meant that I was shattered by the morning of the race that I wasn’t going to be able to shoot from a motorbike.
Given how bad things looked, the day ended up to be ok. Most non-moto photographers stayed at the top of the Mur de Huy, as they feared that if they went anywhere else on the course by car, it would be impossible to get back on time for the first pass of the Mur de Huy. This is where my Tuesday course recce came handy – I knew a good spot and I knew a shortcut that allowed me to get ahead of the race and get back to the finish with enough time in the bank to shoot the first ride up on the Mur.
It was a good day but I wish I was on a motorbike: too many tantalising spot on the course. But there is always next year. I can’t wait.
