I didn’t have high expectations for Nommay. The course that I shot back in 2009 was bland and uninspiring, the weather was neutral, the whole race didn’t really stand out.
However, on Sunday, I think we all witnessed one of the finest races of the season, the last two laps were just a joy to watch, as Philipp Walsleben, Francis Mourey and the eventual winner, Tom Meeusen traded punches, keeping the outcome of the race uncertain all along.
The other pleasant surprise was the crowd. I was a bit vary prior to the event that we were to see a crowd similar to the one in Rome, or the lack of a crowd, to be more precise. However, there were many thousands lining up by the course even for the earliest race and it just grew and grew through the day. And they were loud, too. They cheered all riders but Mourey and all the other domestic riders got a lot of love.
Now it’s a short lull and I’m back on the continent for the Worlds. More on that soon…
