Belgian media frenzy at the Worlds

A friend of mine said once that cyclocross is the Belgian's crickett: a sport that is unknown for the rest of the world but in a handful countries it's one of the most important sports. The media attention therefore was accordingly massive in Tabor at the World Championships and I found it amazing how many reporter/tv crew/photographer tried to have a chat with the riders right after the race.

Children's cycling themed paintings from Tabor

The press center in Tabor during the World Championships were situated in a school. The walls were covered with paintings and drawings from the pupils and the theme was, obviously, cycling. I snapped a couple of photos of these paintings and put them together into one big image, if you click on the image below, you can see it in big (it's 1.2 megabytes, so be patient). My favourite is in the middle of the top row. Which one is you favourite?

The 2010 UCI Cyclo-cross World Champion: Zdenek Stybar

It wasn't really that obvious, that Stybar could win the World Championships with such ease. Everybody was expecting a Stybar-Albert duell but as the race unfolded, that wasn't the case. Here is how it happened.

As he later said, he was exceptionally calm before the race, even his heartrate was below average, a mere 85 bpm. He kept smiling and enjoyed the cheers from the home crowd.

Niels Albert looked much more concerned. As it later turned out, he had every reason to be concerned - he gave up the race after 6 laps.

The first day at my tent in the Expo area of the Worlds was great. Loads of people turned up, took a look at the book and bought it. I've met this wonderful lot during the last couple races and they came along today to check out the book. They were all amazing, thanks for coming around!
