UCI World Cup Cyclo-cross 09/10: the elite men's race in Hoogerheide, Netherlands
Sven Nys and Niels Albert exchanges pre-race niceties.
Though his last really strong performance was back in Igorre, Jonathan Page was incredibly fast, at a certain point of the race he rode at second place which is quite impressive. I hope his form will last until the Worlds.

UCI World Cup Cyclo-cross 09/10: Elite men's race in Roubaix, France
The women's race lasted a bit longer than usual, therefore I almost missed the start. Zdenek Stybar started out fast at the beginning of the race.
By now the mud got so thick that there were quite long sections where the riders were forced to jump off their bikes and run them through. This photo of Sven Nys was taken again with the Canon EF 300 f2.8 lens and the frame is a bit too narrow for my liking but as I said in the previous post, I need to learn the ins and outs of this lens.

The men's cyclo-cross World Cup race in Kalmthout, Belgium

Thijs Al had to miss the last couple weeks due to an injury but he returned to the World Cup circuit in Kalmthout.
Jonathan Page
After the start, I went to the same flight of stairs I had been during the women's race. It soon turned out that one of my favourite riders, Klaas Vantornout was leading the field in the first lap.
Dancing moves: Gerben De Knegt tackles the same corner with elegance.
Niels Albert
Sven Nys got hold up in the first lap but it didn't take him much time to catch up with the front of the field.
Stybar's first lap was quite rubbish but then he constantly gained ground and after the third or the fourth lap he started to lead the race. From time to time, he tried to put a significant gap between him and his chasers but this gap varied from lap to lap and never became substantial.
It was getting late and it the amount of available light was constantly decreasing. There's always a point where the flash is not just a fill-light anymore but becomes dominant in picture. If I can, I try not to use too much direct flash, however, in this situation I didn't really have a choice.
Another photo, same problem: not much available light, direct flash, not so good photo.
Gerben De Knegt in the penultimate lap.
There were some Mongolian riders competing again, sadly, they were lapped and called out of the race pretty soon, again.
Stybar started the last lap in the first place and there seemed to be a sizeable gap between him and chasing riders Nys and Albert.
However, Nys managed to overtake him half-way into the last lap.
Stybar was trying to catch up with Nys.
And that was Albert's plan as well.
But today, Nys was the strongest, claiming the win over Stybar and Albert.

Sven Nys started the race badly but managed to catch up around the half of the race and beat Stybar with 3 seconds.
Stybar seemed very strong throughout the race but in the last lap he couldn't keep Nys behind him. His second place means that he and Albert have equal number of points, but Albert won more races, hence he's still the overall Wold Cup leader.
Niels Albert finished third and he wasn't happy about it at all.
Now we're heading back to Brussels, stay tuned, more to come.

Stybar won his second World Cup race in a row, this time with a bigger margin than last week.
Albert was beaten by Stybar again, however, he is still leading the overall standings.
Sven Nys came third, though he led during the race for many laps.
Juniors' race and the official training
We were pretty lucky so far, though the mud is unbelievably deep and sticky, the weather is warm and it is not raining. But everybody is prepared.
Some people actually enjoyed the mud.

Erwin Vervecken on the same climb. Not many riders were able to pedal all the way through the top.

UCI World Cup Cyclo-cross 09/10: Stybar, Nys, Vantornout are the top 3 in Koksijde, Belgium
After two wins last weekend, Zdenek Stybar clinched his first World Cup victory this year. Well done.
Stybar beat Nys in a sprint finish, this is Sven's second second place in this World Cup season.
Treviso's bronze medalist, Klaas Vantornout, finished third again.

UCI World Cup Cyclo-cross 09/10: Elite Men's race in Plzen, Czech Republic
Zdenek Stybar darted off, as soon as the start gun went off, and managed to put a 20 sec gap between him and the chasing group.
Niels Albert managed to pull away from the chasing group that consisted of Kevin Pauwels, Klaas Vantornout and Sven Nys, who was able to make his way to the front of field, despite the fact that he started the race from the sixth line.
By the fourth lap, Albert took over the lead, whilst Stybar was unable to keep up with the current World Champion's pace.

The camera guy snapped some pictures when he wasn't supposed to cover things with his big camera.
Wherever Stybar rode, the local crowd went berserk, they created an amazing atmosphere. At this point in the race, the gap wasn't more than 10 sec between Albert and his chasers, so he kept checking how far behind they were.
Nys, Stybar and Pauwels were quite close indeed.
The contents of the chasing group were changing constantly, sometimes it was Stybar who had to work hard to catch up; in this lap it was Pauwels who had problems to keep up with Stybar and Nys. Nys seemed to be pretty strong, he left his Treviso-form way behind.
Great champions tend to win with grace and ease but that's just the tip of the iceberg. They have their fair share of suffering.

Albert starts his last lap. The gap was above 35 sec now and he didn't seem to slow down, at all.
The chasing group starts it last lap. It consists of Stybar, Nys, Pauwels and Frenchman Francis Mourey.
No matter how hard the chasing group put the hammer down, Niels Albert was the fastest again.
Champions are allowed to make funny faces.
Stybar led the chasing group to the final sprint but he was unable to outpower Nys, so not long before the finish line he gave up and let Nys take the silver medal.

I wanted to snap a couple frames at the press conference, however, I didn't take into consideration the effects of coming in from the cold had on my lenses. They were covered with a layer of fog which rendered them basically useless for the next 20 minutes.
UCI World Cup Cyclo-cross 09/10: Morning races and the official practice in Plzen, Czech Republic
As it turned out earlier today, there would be no women's World Cup race, so I was hanging around the course and snapped photos of the other races that included junior and women ones.
Pavla Havlikova
Sven Nys was one of the first elite riders on the course when the official practice started. Since he didn't finish the race in Treviso, he will start from the penultimate, 6th row. However, overtaking other riders on this course won't be an issue.

2008/2009 Cyclo-cross Retrospect: Sven Nys
Since then he claimed six more, including the 08/09, won the Worlds in 2005 and million other races as well. Though he focuses on cyclo-cross, his off-road talents can be quite useful when he participates mountain bike races: his 9th places at the Beijing Olympics was pretty amazing.
Though this year, reigning World Champion, Niels Albert seems to be unbeatable, Nys isn't far behind and will certainly will want his share of wins.
