Visiting Gabby Day
It's 7am and I'm sitting on the floor of the guest room in Gabby Day's house, absolutely knackered. Last night she and her partner, Rick took me and a couple of their friends out to dinner. After the first sip of my Peroni, a cracked beer glass cut my finger which resulted in a complimentary bottle of Peroni (both were a massive, big bottle, not just a pint) from the restaurant and a cider a local bar was just the finishing touch.

So the remnants of last night plus the long driving caused fatigue glued my eyes together this morning but I need to leave early to catch the morning training at Dalby Forest. Gabby and Rick were amazing hosts, thank you for everything. I had a chat with Gabby about bikes, training and life in general, plus she showed me all the gems in their garage, which I'm going to all write up in a post in the near future, but now it's time to head to Pickering to see some world-class mountain biking action.
Photo ebook of Gabriella Day - UCI Cyclocross World Cup 09/10 season
What should you do if your home country is not involved in your favourite sport? I, for one, decided to support the riders of my new home, the UK. So when I started to cover cyclo-cross World Cup races, I always paid extra attention to British riders. One of them is Gabby Day, a young and fun rider from Lincolnshire, and she didn't fall short of surprising her fans with a couple of remarkable results.
I got quite excited in Koksijde, when she whizzed past at the 9th place at certain parts of the race and finishing 10th was probably the highlight of her season. We met briefly after the race and she expressed how happy she felt, as she didn't like the sandy course but she managed to perform excellently despite of that. Also, the massive British fan contingent might have played a tiny part in that 10th place.

Photo ebook of Caroline Mani - UCI Cyclocross World Cup 09/10 season

French rider Caroline Mani had a consistent season: she finished 7th overall by finishing almost always within the top10. She is one of my favourites, she grimaces almost all the time, providing us, photographers with spectacle facial expressions. She was mountain bike racing last summer so it's probably safe to assume that she will be seen around this summer too.

Podium girls of the season
It is a well known fact how carefully the organizers of the Tour De France choose the podium girls. Though it might be seen as a sexist practice, the point is, I think, is to make even this part of the race as perfect as possible. Therefore, I was quite pleased when the podium girls appeared on the stage after the first race in Treviso: their attire was impeccable and they definitely showed that the organizers were trying to make an effort.
In my opinion, this wasn't true for all the races afterwards, the Italians probably set the standards too high. Here are the photos I snapped during the season, you be the judge.
Three podium girls in Treviso.
This girl was smiling in Plzen, though it was raining cats and dogs during the award ceremony.
Three young girls in Nommay.
World Cup #4, Koksijde.
World Cup #6, Kalmthout.
World Cup #7, Heusden-Zolder.
One podium girl in Roubaix.
Miss JFMODA in Hoogerheide.
Photo ebook of Erwin Vervecken - UCI Cyclocross World Cup 09/10 season
This season was the last for a great rider: three-time world champion Erwin Vervecken retired in 2010. Though this last season wasn't as successful as the previous one (with two World Cup race wins), he barely missed the podium in Roubaix. After a long racing career, he can spend more time with his beloved family, here's a little reminder of his last season.

Belgian media frenzy at the Worlds
A friend of mine said once that cyclocross is the Belgian's crickett: a sport that is unknown for the rest of the world but in a handful countries it's one of the most important sports. The media attention therefore was accordingly massive in Tabor at the World Championships and I found it amazing how many reporter/tv crew/photographer tried to have a chat with the riders right after the race.
