When December arrives, it brings all the muddy races. These are the races that are always muddy, to varying degree, but they are mucky even if it wasn’t raining much the week(s) prior to the race. Essen, this year, was rather humble and while there was some mud, it didn’t end up being the main feature.
Quite different from my first visit here, back in 2011, when there was so much mud in the press car park, that only a tractor could pull me out. How I could find a tractor after the race in the dark is a story for another day. For now, I’m off to Overijse tomorrow, the mother of all crosses! More to come soon…

Laurens Sweeck did so well today! It was very entertaining watching him chasing van der Poel. He totally deserved the 2nd place as his effort and stamina was a very welcome difference compared to other races this season.
