The other day, I was going through some old photos and have found these, from one of the first cyclocross races I’ve ever photographed, the World Cup race in Roubaix, back in 2009. Funnily enough, the race was held five years ago, on this day. Enjoy this little glimpse into the past, though it was only five years ago, so much has changed.
Looking at photos makes me realise how much we change. The young Zach McDonald looks so, well, young.
An also very young Lars van der Haar in the middle of the junior race’s pack.
Another rider, who is junior on this photo and just became an elite rider this season: Corne van Kessel.
If my notes are correct, this is David Fletcher, who just finished second in the U23 category of the British National Championships.
U23 race, Philipp Walsleben was a massively dominant both at this race and through the whole season.
Daphny van den Brand, on her way to win the race. She raced for three more seasons before she retired in 2012.
Nikki Harris, well before the Telenet-Fidea years.
The podium of the women’s race, with Katie Compton celebrating her first (?) win at Roubaix.
Zdenek Stybar descends in the first lap of the race. This was a year before his first elite men World Champion title, so he wears ‘only’ the Czech National Champion colours.
Another rider, who has left cross: Lars Boom, the then-World Champion. This wasn’t his finest day, not finishing on the podium eventually.
Sven Nys rides in the white skinsuit, that belonged to the leader of the World Cup. Directly behind him rides Bart Wellens, behind him Niels Albert and Zdenek Stybar look at their respective drivetrains.
